There's a simple thing that can make a big difference in your enjoyment of your area rugs; a rug pad/underlay.

Using a special pad beneath your area rugs can remove some of the unpleasant hassles of bunching, uneven wear, slipping, and even prolong the life of your beautiful rugs and floors.

Using a quality rug pad in your home can:

  1. Protect your family from accidents A quality non-slip rug pad beneath smaller rugs will prevent slipping and help to avoid accidents.
  2. Prolong the life of your area rug A pad absorbs a lot of the stress of regular use that often leads to premature wear.  When an area rug on top of a carpet is wrinkled and then walked on, the areas of wrinkles will wear faster than other parts, while a rug pad helps to keep it smooth.
  3. Protect your wood floors The backs of many rugs are rough to help prevent slipping.  Using a rug pad protects wood floors from scratches.  For rugs with furniture on them, a dense rug pad will also resist the weight of the furniture to preven indentations in your floor.
  4. Add insulation and comfort A good rug pad can add warmth to floors that tend to be cold, add padding beneath your feet, and greatly reduce sound.  This is especially helpful in apartments with wood floors.

Choosing the best rug pad for you depends on the type of flooring you have beneath your area rug.  If you have hardwood floors, we recommend a felt jute or felt jute and natural rubber combination pad.  Non-slip pads are usually better for smaller area rugs on hardwood or carpet, and for those we'd recommend real rubber, as rubber won't damage your floors and prevent slipping.
