Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of cleaning method do you use?
At Hammond Knoll, we are skilled at using several different cleaning methods. Thermal extraction, portable extraction, dry foam, dry bonnet, and rotary extraction cleaning are all available to us for on-site cleaning. For cleaning area rugs in our plant, there are many more techniques used depending on what the rug is made of (silk, wool, cotton, etc.) For most of our on-site cleaning, however, we generally recommend the powerful truck-mounted thermal extraction process. Thermal extraction is the most effective means for removing deep stains and ground-in soil. Extraction cleaning is also recommended by most major carpet manufacturers to maintain their warranties. Please
contact us if you have specific questions on cleaning techniques.

How often should I clean my carpet and upholstery in my home?
Spots and spills should be attended to immediately for the best removal results. For most in-home carpets, the average interval between cleaning is between six months and one year depending on the type of carpet and how it is used. Some customers with children or pets will have high traffic areas cleaned every other month. Carpet warranties require professional cleaning at least one time per year to maintain their warranties. A thorough cleaning also reduces dust and dander that cause problems for people with allergies.

How often should a business clean its carpet and upholstery?
Commercially, cleaning intervals are determined by use and appearance. Daycare centers and restaurants, for example, typically clean their carpets monthly. Professional and medical offices will often clean quarterly. Please
contact us for recommendations on your facility.

How long will it take my carpets to dry?
Drying times will vary depending on the temperatures of the room and the type of carpet. Typically, carpets will dry in two to five hours. Heavy soiling or low temperature conditions may extend the time the carpet takes to dry.

What do you do about pet or water damage odors?
There are many specialized techniques for eliminating odors caused from pets, water damage, cooking, or smoke. Please
contact us for specific instructions.

Do you use chemicals that are harmful to animals?
No. Our detergents are very mild and contain no harmful solvents. Please
contact us if you have any specific concerns.

Are your technicians experienced?
Our technicians carry a variety of special certifications from the International Institute of Carpet and Rug Cleaners, and the Association of Specialists of Carpet and Rug Cleaning. Many of our employees have been in the industry for between five and 15 years. All of our employees have gone through background screening and are insured and bonded.

Do you clean furniture?
We clean all types of fabric-covered furniture, both in our shop and on-site. We clean home and office furniture as well as boats and RVs.

Do you repair carpet?
Carpet restretching, seam repair, burns, and dyeing can be done in your wall-to-wall carpeting. Area rugs can be re-fringed, re-surged, and repaired as needed.

Should I apply Teflon fabric protection?
Teflon can be applied to most fabrics to make them much more resistant to spills and tracked-in soils. It is especially helpful for homes with children or pets and for those who entertain frequently.

Do I have to move the furniture before you arrive?
No. Our crews will take care of large furniture moving. We just ask that you move all breakable items from the furniture to be moved.
