(Just kidding…sorta!)

All joking aside, what lives inside your carpet has been known to cause an “Eewww!” or a “Yuck!” from the mouths of people who like to live in a clean, healthy environment.

You all know dust mites live in our pillows and mattresses, right?

What you may not know is that dust mites live in your carpet too, among other delightful allergy-causing bacterias.

The most common allergy-causing irritants that live in your carpet are:

  • Dust Mites.
  • Pollens from outdoors that are tracked in on shoes or through open doors and windows.
  • Dust.
  • Pet dander.
  • Insect parts such as fecal matter. ( )
  • Mold.

These pesky allergens are not only disgusting but can cause health issues, especially in those who are more allergy-sensitive.

These are the most common symptoms of allergies caused by allergens in the carpet:

  • Watery eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Itchy skin
  • Hives
  • Wheezing
  • And in some rare cases, tightness in your chest

Now, to answer the important question, “How can I get rid of the allergens in my carpet?”

6 ways to wave bye-bye to allergies

There are a few things you can do at home to rid your carpet from allergens to help prevent the next sneezing attack:

1. Leave footwear at the door.

Have your guests and family members leave their shoes outside, especially in the spring and summer months when flowers, trees and grasses are blooming

2. Vacuum once per week.

Most manufacturers recommend this anyhow, so you might as well do-it!

If you or a loved one suffer from allergies, wear a mask and stay out of the room for 20 minutes while the dust that was stirred up settles in the room(s) that were vacuumed.

3. Use a Hepa Air Filter.

The Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology dictates that HEPA filters must trap 99.97% of particulates 0.3 microns or larger.

4. Lower the humidity.

To get rid of dust mites, use a dehumidifier to lower the humidity in the room or home to 30-50%.

5. Have your carpet professionally steam cleaned.

Once a year, have professionals steam clean your carpets.

If you have pets, get the room(s) where the pets hang out cleaned two times per year

6. Get an anti-allergen treatment.

Have an anti-allergen treatment applied to carpets professionally after cleaning

A professional carpet cleaner (hint: HammondKnoll) that cleans with hot water extraction destroys allergens and bacteria that live in your carpet (and upholstery, too).

Why a commercial anti-allergen application?

Check out the reasons why this is such a good idea:

  • The solution denatures irritants like dust mites and dog/cat dander.
  • It lasts up to 6 months.
  • It’s hypo-allergenic.
  • It doesn’t have any perfumes or solvents.

These are all big YAYs!

Begone with your bad self allergies!

Now that you’re a little more allergy-educated, you can make strides in keeping the irritants that make you feel sneezy and sick out of your space.

Follow these six tips and give allergies the boot.
